Leadership in the development and provision of regional hepatopancreatobiliary surgical services for over a decade with personal tertiary referrals from throughout NW England and Wales, and increasingly elsewhere; throughput has doubled within the last three years. Complemented by a thriving clinical research programme funded by the Medical Research Council and NHS Health Technology Assessment Programme, thus far personally supervising 21 higher degree and post-doctoral fellows. Promotion of clinical effectiveness through editorship of the Cochrane Hepatobiliary Review Group for the last 8 years, ongoing. Frequent lectures in the UK and abroad in 14 countries, contributing to opinion formation nationally and internationally. Work recognised by the conferment of full professorial status from a Russell Group University, press releases from the Medical Research Council and National Academy of Sciences USA, citations in Marquis Who’s Who and the Cambridge Blue Book. Service on national and international committees in the field, co-author of national guidelines and contributor to the organisation and faculty membership of many national and international symposia and conferences. Continuing commitment to undergraduate curriculum development, postgraduate training and external examining at all levels in basic biomedical science, clinical science and clinical practice.
